We hope you are enjoying your summer holidays. The end of August marks dissertation deadlines, particularly for master's students. This newsletter will share 5 practical tips you can use today to support you towards achieving a first-class degree.

Use ChatGPT to outline, edit and brainstorm - use ChatGPT to begin an outline or structure of a few chapters within the dissertation. This will help you to quickly determine an outline of various chapters, such as the literature review. ChatGPT is free to use and there are no usage limits. Sign up > here

You can use these AI prompts below:
1. Outline the introduction section of my dissertation, including the research background, problem statement, research questions, and objectives.
2. Create an outline for the literature review chapter, organising the key themes, theories, and studies relevant to your research topic.
3. Develop a detailed outline for the methodology chapter, covering the research design, data collection methods, sample selection, and data analysis techniques.
4. Outline the findings/results chapter, breaking down the key outcomes of your research and organising them logically.
5. Create an outline for the discussion chapter, including the interpretation of results, comparison with existing literature, and addressing research limitations.

Focus on the most important sections first - given the time constraint, prioritise the essential parts of your dissertation. Concentrate on the introduction (including research questions and objectives), literature review and findings/results. You do not need to write the dissertation from start to end, rather start from the most important sections and then fill in the gaps.
Create a detailed daily schedule - this is advice you have probably pushed aside but planning can change the course of your dissertation. Plan your days meticulously, allocating specific time slots for researching, writing and editing. Break down each chapter and section into smaller tasks, setting realistic goals for each day. Stick to the schedule rigorously to make the most of the limited time. Specify exactly what you want to complete on each day and stick to it - within just 1 week you'd be able to finish a large chunk, then the second week can be spent polishing and editing.
Stay focused and limit perfectionism - one of the biggest challenges when writing is the need for perfection. Let go of this need and write freely! This mindset will help you write without the need to edit.
